The Working Artist

The Working Artist

In these one-day workshops, Crista Cloutier will lead you through exercises to help identify your creative and professional goals. She will explain how the business side of the art world works and detail how to be best develop a career as a professional artist.

The days of turning one’s career over to a gallery are long past – if they ever really were. Artists are responsible for their own careers, finances, and marketing. Too often the cry, “But I’m creative!” is used as an excuse to place one’s head in the sand. But the most successful artists today are those who manage to take care of business and still manage to create. For the most part, few of them possessed innate business and organization skills when they began. Like anything else, these skills were learned. And in a large part, it is these skills that contribute directly to their success.

Handle your business – as well as your art-making practice – as a professional. If you are serious about a career in art, you must learn how to put together a professional cv and bio, how to craft an artist’s statement that rings true to your vision, and how to connect with decision-makers. You need to understand how to best present your work so that it stands out, and how to navigate the choppy waters of pricing your work. In this workshop, you will also learn creative marketing skills to get your work noticed as well as financial tools necessary to the unique fiscal situation of professional artists.

This class is open to professional artists, art professionals, and those who dream of being able to support themselves as such.

Actively involved in the contemporary art world throughout her career, Crista Cloutier is internationally recognized as a writer, photographer, curator, and documentary filmmaker.
